(1) What inequities are you most concerned about as it relates to education or services for Black youth?(2) While the City doesn’t operate the school district, many City departments serve youth and their families (Health, Parks & Rec, Libraries, and Economic Development). What services and programs could be offered for youth in our City that will help eliminate racism and racial inequities?(3) How can the City collaborate with LBUSD, LBCC, CSULB, and other partners in education to reduce the inequities among Black youth and other youth of color, including youth with disabilities, trans and non-binary youth, and youth in foster care?(4) Picture a Long Beach 10 years from now where Black youth and other youth of color are thriving. What does it look like and how did we get here? What are your ideas or recommendations for making this a reality?

Looking at suspension rates and practices is very important. While correlation does not equal causation, we need to acknowledge that 23% of youth that are suspended end up having contact with the justice system.

01:13:49
@jenn 😊

trauma-informed curriculum

01:20:43
culturally relevant education

01:22:45
Teachers need to have: Teacher Diversity Training: needs to be critical where they analyze the oppression that their students of colors are going through,

01:23:52
Police don’t make student’s feel safe they actually make students feel scared on the other hand

01:24:13
I am with a wetlands protection group (the Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust) and we believe strongly that access to the natural world is a right for all people, not just those with the resources to travel etc. We have been sponsoring educational field trips for kids who participate in Long beach’s BeSAFE program and for some Long Beach schools but we would like to do more. Please email me suggestions and partnership ideas at elizabeth@lcwlandtrust.org

01:25:32
Your skilled facilitation is seen and appreciated, Chrysta. Thank you for your commitment to equity of voice and the process to ensure it.

01:25:33
recommendation for the City: create a web page that list and clearly delineates the difference in roles and responsibilities of the city and LBUSD, and list collaboration between the two, shared funding sources, etc. As well as, info on how to access LBUSD.

01:26:29
Great idea Jerlene, thank you.

01:26:48
the youth ambassadors can go before me if we run out of time

01:27:09

01:27:38
Agreed. Great idea, Jerlene.

01:28:17
City of Long Beach does not have any dedicated funding. Youth programs and services are always at risk of being cut. Its difficult to track and see how young people are being invested in in the city

01:28:44
dedicated funding for youth*

01:28:59
recommendation for City: when violence occurs in our city near our schools, or when our children are in transit to or from....that there is a joint respond from LBUSD leadership and City leadership. last year we had r

01:29:27
last year there was r

01:30:45
last year there was two incidents and neither LBUSD or the city stepped forward to respond, both claimed it was the others responsibility.

01:38:46
yes defund the police and reinvest in black youth and youth of color and their families

01:39:18
another silent violence upon these communities is environmental justice which impacts all aspects of life, health foremost- and the youth continue to show up and speak up on those injustices, pushing for change in policies to protect our shared future

I would like to thank the City’s youth ambassadors for being here and joining the conversation. I would remiss not to share and give credit to ALL of the youth ambassadors that have contributed to the development of the youth plan and the Invest in Youth campaign, especially our black, and trans colleagues that have led many of our conversations in the past, and now, understandably are looking to us and their peers to keep the conversations going. Marissa, Alexis, Jenn, and Ian, y’all have made them proud.

01:42:45
Recommendation: Teachers play a key role to dismantle racial oppression in classrooms. The notion of one group is superior or raising above the other group should be eliminated through teaching class on racism and structural violence.

01:43:35
LBUSD must engage local cultural bearers in addressing cultural inequities within the curriculum.

01:44:55
Youth were great. Where are the teachers and counselors in this process?

01:45:10
Great for them to listen

01:46:24

01:46:40
All teachers should be given credit for enrolling in the LBUSD Ethnic Studies classes, especially if they haven’t been introduced to these new cultural narratives.
