--Reflective Questions For Tonight’s Discussion--1.What is currently working well in terms of ensuring Black people and other POC have access to good-paying jobs? What isn’t working well?2. What kind of recruitment, hiring, promotion and career advancement policies and practices would ensure that Black people have jobs where they can support their families, build wealth, and not face anti-Black discrimination?3. How can we ensure our young people can land good jobs in the field of their choice?4. Many people have to commute for jobs in LA, the South Bay, or Irvine. How do we create more good jobs here in Long Beach?

54:49
Very appreciative of Jocelyn for starting this conversation off with youth employment program opportunities and access, thank you

55:17
Maybe Pacific Gateways should have satellite locations.

55:52
yes satellite-based sites would be amazing 👏

56:23
what happened to the high school volunteer and community service requirements

56:36
Here is the Pacific Gateway website: https://www.pacific-gateway.org/

57:02
that requirement helps you the build important skills for the workplace and develop personally and professionally

57:44
Next speaker: Juanita D.

58:11
the youth need skill building and transferable skills development

59:16
our city should invest in Vocational programming in our communities that are black owned

59:42
yes transitional age students

01:00:27
we need the corner pop up shop to reopen and more corner pop up shops in the community

01:00:45
For folks coming out of prison, there are models out there, like the B.E.S.T. that Sustainable South Bronx used to do, analogous to the W.I.N.T.E.R. program here in Long Beach, but of course, not at a gas plant, in the clean energy jobs of the future: https://www.ssbx.org/home

Great points, Juanita. I’m a CSULB professor, and I couldn’t agree more.

01:02:06
Yes Eboney Pearson!

01:03:04
more City mentoring days for disadvantaged youth and adults like Disability Mentoring Day. we need more experiences and exposure 🙏

What happened to the city jobs for the Homeless?

01:05:44
Thank you Susancarlile! I’m on the CSAC board. This past season I co-hosted at Cash for College even in the city. The attendance was dismal for the students. We also offered a session to assist families with completing the FASFA. We are working better ways to do out reach in the schools.

link to African American Cultural Center in long beach would bring a lot of energy and employment opportunities

01:08:22
can we discuss when we will revisit the African American Cultural Center development???????????

01:09:05
I remember Job Core, and the Peace Core from backing the day. These type of programs offered young people the opportunity to explore different areas of employment. Summer youth need the opportunity to have summer jobs and explore areas of employment.

01:09:46
Vocations, trades, specialist are in demand, we need to teach our youth and community sustainability

01:11:10
those are two maps I made for a project on environmental injustice on the eastside... please note which census tracts in both measures (SVI vs. CES) we knew in 2017 had more baseline vulnerabilities - very similar to the maps we're seeing about racial/ethnic disparities in covid-19 hospitalizations/deaths as well as, say, racial profiling

01:11:14
yes what happened to the construction, carpentry etc programs LBCC PCC campus just received some attention and work. however NEEDS more just as the LBCC LAC campus gets

01:12:15
is recidivism profitable for the city of Long Beach???

01:12:59
Defend LBPD and put some of that in re-entry programs

01:13:03
LBUSD has a lot of inquiry when it comes to funding, West Side and North Side schools, which teach mostly Brown, Black and Asian kids are unfairly underfunded compared to Lakewood, Los Alamitos, Belmont area schools which aside from school funding, are also “GIFTED” with many donations from rich alumni in their traditionally rich, white neighboorhoods

01:13:09
*Defund

01:14:50
Freedom Writers all over again!!!

01:15:03
Just this June 15 LBUSD board meeting, superintendent steinhauser himself approved over $7,000 in gifts to Longfellow Elementary only, that school is in the middle of Belmont and Naples area which we all know has a lot of rich white people. No $7000 + gifts are given to WS or NS schools

01:15:41
A young person commits a crime in the 20s and is punished for life. They can rehabilitate in prison and change. But, the path to get a GOOD job is hard... IF they succeed in getting a good job. So, there has to be a point where they can be put on the same level playing field as everyone else. As a young person, they didn't have the skills or resources to even try to think about their future. So, it's day-to-day living, not thinking about their 30s, 40s, and even retirement. Hopefully Long Beach can find ways to support their residents who are in this category.

01:15:43
What about Franklin? Whitter? Burnet? Poly???

01:16:15
Link to June 15 LBUSD board meeting where a disproportionate amount of $$$ was “gifted” to Longfellow and no Brown or Black schools:

01:16:17
https://www.lbschools.net/Asset/Files/BOE/Agenda/2020-06-15-Agenda.pdf

01:17:12
are we all very appreciative of the jobs we have right now??? look at how everyone is responding to unemployment now? black people have been unemployed and undeserved forever.

01:17:24
I think Long Beach needs to have reentry job programs for people coming out of prison.

01:17:37
I personally went to all West Side schools but have a lot of family in the North Side, there have been so many times where we don’t even have soap or even toilet paper in West side/ North side schools

01:18:50
having a good paying job that is not discriminatory---- builds confidence, self worth, independence and self sufficiency

01:18:53
Will "affirmative action" returning help?

01:19:25
This unequal funding is a result of systemic racism within the City of Long Beach and Long Beach Unified School District

01:19:40
No school should be financed “better” than the other

01:20:38
invest in black businesses so the youth can feel comfortable making the transition to work

01:20:57
Can the city create some "guaranteed jobs" as internships especially in the social and health services?

01:21:09
unpaid internships are unfair

01:21:22
Next speaker: Susanne

01:21:36
Just about every job requires a bachelor's/experience. Can the City of Long Beach review their civil service job descriptions and re-evaluate if a bachelor's or experience are really required. There are people who can do the jobs without a bachelor's or all of the experience that is "required". This may open up some good paying jobs for everyone.

01:22:08
Rich white kids get an advantage bc of daddy’s cash, meanwhile lower income kids like myself had to work 2-3 side jobs while still doing the required internship and school at the same time

01:22:15
more scholarships opportunities for youth to get attire they need, equipment and supplies to succeed in Vocational school

Yes to Juanita’s point on building credit. Also, how do we expand opportunities to alternative financing for small business owners? Lack of capital access a big challenge!

01:24:11
Yes Jocelyn!!

01:24:31
What about more Entrepreneurial training such as is available at the LBCC Small Business Development Center

01:24:58
Summer job programs for jr. high school and high school kids. Field trips to different places like,

01:24:58
head start entrepreneurship

01:25:17
Yes, Jocelyn!

01:25:41
There may not be support outside of the school hours. Requiring volunteering in schools could be an issue for students who are tasked with caring for younger siblings or who have to work to help support their families.

01:26:23
Thank you Christa! Not able to speak out loud bc of work rn but I appreciate you acknowledging my comments! :)

01:26:30
There are programs pacific gateway has but they are not getting to the community. There are programs that pay employers for hiring youth, for hiring people on parole and for hiring people who are homeless but they do not do the right outreach that is why community groups are key for this. we cannot continue to have an iron curtain around the jobs and programs

01:27:02
The big companies can have mentor programs. I worked with a company/contractor that went to big companies with their mentorship program and the companies had large participation from employees. Those employees worked with students over a period of time and got to know them/build a relationship. The contractor facilitated the process and kids got to learn about different jobs and meet people from different walks of life.

01:27:29
There should be more technical education at schools instead. Students can earn preliminary certifications, gain job training, and learn technical skills all while earning course credits

01:27:43
Yes when I was around 15 I got a summer job with pacific gateway, it was cleaning bathrooms at Hughes middle school

01:28:09
exactly community benefit agreement on development we need that

01:28:19
It was me and a couple of other latina girls and Black girls as well

01:28:31
pacific gateway offered me a quiet and productive environment to job search and feel like I was trying to better myself

01:28:37
To give a concrete example on #1 and #2 related to environmental justice and the history I spoke on, earlier today the planning commission had an agenda item on the redevelopment of industrial land directly north of Willow Springs - this is an example of where PLA, Local Hire could be included, when this project proposal comes to Council, in a recommendation on community benefits

01:28:56
Speaking Order: 1: Eboney (2) Keith

01:29:07
100 girl

01:29:08
yes

01:29:12
More generally, I would like to see Office of Equity review of community benefits/ community harms, along with the CEQA process on some of these big projects

01:29:34
YESSSSS WRAP AROUND SERVICES needed. Comprehensive Vocational support

01:30:11
coppy?

01:31:06
should i type

01:31:15
I don't know if the city of Long Beach has a summer job program for teens where the youth can learn about those positions while working.

01:31:29
I'll type

01:33:00
Yes Keith!

01:33:14
We need that anthony

01:33:57
Yes, we need Business Resource Centers. Some community colleges have a program called "Maker" curriculum which is very creative and hands-on; a Business Resource Center could have such a program.

01:34:01
I think BID's and Business associations should have diversity efforts , example working with Black Owned Business/entrepreneurs. Demographics of who is able to successfully open and provide jobs, the same applies to businesses that come in as transplants but may not be hiring locally or hiring divers groups. CD9 & CD2's BID are drastically different, but their efforts could match with intention.

01:34:03
I believe someone mentioned corporations: For example, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Raytheon have a philanthropic division of their business. Having these organizations offer their programs and partner with the school district, and after school and youth programs.

01:34:04
Thank you Keith!

01:34:21
Another example, this time on #4, related to the history I mentioned, is all of the land in Long Beach currently occupied by aging, low-yield or non-functional oil infrastrcuture. I don't know what kinds of recommendations can be made on the legislative agenda of the council, but I strongly recommend folks find ways to support AB345 open to them, given the number of black and brown folks in the LA basin, including Long Beach, affected: https://www.stand.la/

01:36:02
Urbanvillagefamilyservices@gmail.com offers Vocational support and has partnered with V.I.P. Records to open up opportunities #ouryouthmatters

01:36:51
Even without AB345, we can create Just Transition programs for jobs in environmental restoration right away, as a City

Great idea Jerlene

01:39:52
Thank you, agree on that aspect of emergency management

01:39:57
Urban Village Family Services would like to request the city of Long Beach to consider supporting us. We have developed a program design that is proven to produce positive outcomes and we successfully operate in TX

01:42:08
Thank you! Invest. the citu is capable of offering and generating grants

01:43:18
Thank you Shirin and and Jerlene - this is why we need community benefits agreements on projects to stipulate local hire and PLA provisions - I would really like to see how jobs like the ones mentioned in the article could be primarily apprenticed and trained in black and low-income communities: https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2020-07-01/want-jobs-and-clean-energy-this-overlooked-technology-could-deliver-both

01:43:37
thank you

01:43:40
for clarity

01:45:26
Great evening!!!

01:46:06
Thank you for the opportunity 🙏 ❤

01:47:45
Parks and Rec needs a lot of help

01:47:49
I recommend that you have a meeting survey that soley collects demographic data for the participants on the call. (1) The same survey is posted on the City's equity page so unless a different survey is provided during the calls there is no efficient way to determine if the surveys come from attendees or directly from the website. (2) Since name or email is not captured there is no way to know if a person completes the survey multiple times. Based upon the continuous invite to fill it out on each call, I guess it is okay, YET, the issue of the data collected will be misleading with duplicated participants. Also, wouldn't be more useful if the survey was related to the topic matter of the call?***Since it has been stated that survey data compiled will be used to help inform decisions I would hope that there would be a desire to collect precise data. Also, if this is about Black/African American people capturing the actual numbers of African American participants and demographic data is relevant.

01:48:54
mi OP

01:49:34
Also the idea of a Universal Basic Income is gaining traction statewide and nationally, and I believe our own Mayor has recently signed on to a coalition of Mayors looking into piloting UBI programs, already in place in a limited capacity in Stockton CA

01:52:28
they should come up with a program to streamline the permitting process for costs and provide informa how to write grants to help with those costs. specifically for black owned business and pro use counselors at the resource center to help navigate the process

01:53:10
General topic: When presenting the data from surveys, can the City of Long Beach include outreach efforts? It helps to understand what works and doesn't work. I'd also like to see how the council members promoted the framework. The data will show that they should step-up to the plate to ensure their constituents are informed. Or the city can create the communication and promotion pieces and all they have to do is click "post" or " send". The process can be easy to promote these sessions and information... they just need to do it. Council members are the face of Long Beach in many ways. if it's not important to them, this doesn't seem important to a lot of people.

01:53:21
pacific gateway does not train businesses

01:53:33
For the PLA: re-define “local” be LB; re-define “disadvantaged” with Metro’s definition; and hire and independent third party jobs coordinator to build the pipeline from community to labor

01:53:52
Exactly Susanne

01:54:01
*an independent third party jobs coordinator

01:54:47
the UCLA Labor Center has served in that role before, regionally
