Q1 response: I’ve read through a couple of other counties in other states’ models with regards to community safety and reforming their policing “structure”, some follow on questions or thoughts I’d have:

Camden, NJ - Minneapolis, MN - there are lots of models for different models of policing and funding public safety goals - what we need is an integrated approach, especially since so much of the city's revenue streams are bound up in dirty energy. We know that as Californians, we are leading the State in building the jobs of the future in renewable energy, weatherization, net zero building construction, etc. - clean energy economy jobs, high road jobs with career pathways...good middle class jobsWhat we don't really have is an understanding of how far behind that curve Long Beach is, or how much our public spending on economic development actually hollows out our town, since the jobs and firms who benefit neither live nor otherwise work here. Quiet is also is kept on how the priorities across a number of city departments necessitate that they undercut the efforts towards Health Equity or Restorative Justice, as we have more than anecdotal evidence certain department heads have done as recently as Friday.

What is going to be done about the citizen police complaint commission CPCC? They are a fraud and the city needs to get a real oversight teams that is not connected to the LBPD.

I definitely would like to know how this process will be evaluated and reiterated and improved this time next year

To Deaka and Everett's points:Accountability is missing from all Police Depts across the United States. There are no consequences for corrupt officers. They are protect by qualified immunity. No one is above the law, and murder should result in serious consequences, not a desk job or paid leave.Training needs to be more extensive. Requirements need to be heightened. We cannot entrust someone with a gun and the abilty to take a life wthout proper education. Prerequisites should include a college degree and specific ethnic studies courses. Doctor's are subjected to years of study, residencies, and fellowships before they are intrusted with the care of human beings. The police should be expected to possess more than a high school degree. This is the minimum. Policing needs be reimagined, immediately defunded, and subject to consistent review by an outside party.

Police unions are definitely something else to look at, it makes it really difficult for cops who want to do the right thing or, dare I say “dime out” some of their more corrupt counterparts difficult to do. I feel like that’s one of the first steps to review with regards to accountability

I agree about hiring soldiers to be police officers. They are trained killers. On the other hand, they hire kids fresh out of Highschool with no ties to Long Beach communities that only know about what they see on tv and what they hear. So, most of the people that are hired to police our communities are really not qualified to do so.

I know this is a bit off the rails….but I’d be a little weary about people dehumanizing military members. I definitely agree we want to change the recruiting strategy to emphasize character values appropriate to serving the community

How about actually requiring them to know the law! None of these high school kids, no ex military. Extend the schooling process of police.

A lot of the problems that we have here is that the education is and has been lacking. There needs to be real education and learning going on here. For example teach people to read where they can really read and understand what it is they are reading. Then apprentice where a person can practice what it is they learned and improve their skills.

@bridgette LBPD has killed at least 30 folks in custody in the last 10 years and very few have been prosecuted or faced legal repercussions. LBPD committed a hate crime against me by saying they want to run me a bisexual man out of Long Beach. Then Officer Olea wrote a false report on a crime that was committed where I live. I have proof of what I say, I have the false report and a video that proves Olea lied. He was the same one who committed the hate crime against me. Nothing has been done and this happened in November 2019. It is a crime for a police officer to write a false report.

People keep saying psychiatry should be used but the truth is psychiatry has been around a long time and things have only gotten worse. That is proof that psychiatry does not work because if it really worked things would be getting better not worse. Not only that but the psych med drugs are poisons that kill people. Most of the mass shooters are on psych meds when they get guns and kill people in and out of schools. I grew up in a time when we did not have all of the psych meds they push on people today and we never had anybody take a gun to school and kill people.

Intercultural communication @ CSULB was pivotal to understanding and talking to each other.. If only all police applicants were required to take this course.

How does a parent explain that to their kid? When I asked as a kid why does it stop at Willow? I was told "Because we're Black".

The investment that has been made to "beautify" Long Beach is sold to long time residents as a way to better our lived experience in the city, but we have seen that that is not the case. It is to bring in new money and change the demographics of the city to match the profiles of our neighboring beach cities. It has resulted in the displacement of Black and POC folks who cannot afford to live in the place they have called home to gentrification.

Fellow attendees, if we are expecting the people who benefit by being in the system to hear us and do the right thing, I think we are fooling ourselves. Tom, Mayor, Council Members, Directors, don't want to fix anything. Fixing anything will mean they need to let go of their power. We need to replace those with who are in the power currently and replace them with the people who are not career politicians. This is just an attempt to let us run out of the steam. We need to strategize outside this "listening session".

resources for students who should know more about African Americans and their history - CSULB Black Studies department has courses in history, sociology, etc. -prospective police should take them!

Action call for the City and media to promote good things about Black people and the real situations that we face.

The Community College System has made a statement that they are looking at the revision of the curriculum that is provided to train Police Officers (Community Colleges train over 70% of all officers) BLM is influencing that change.

@Anthony, City Officials don't have the power to make decisions like the Council and Mayor has. Also, as @Dave mentioned, not every City Official will care about this because they benefit from the inequity that exists. I think we are in a bad place with the council we have and lack of accountability.

I work for a local government and there are various roles. So, all can assist in changes. It depends on the topic and role.

I actually reached out to dbf to see about adding concrete details for their proposed budget,

it’s principally sound such as it is (the people’s budget) but it definitely could use more details, will try and assist
